According to an ancient legend, the Rhodope Mountain is the birth place of Orpheus, who was enchanting animals and people with his music.

Another myth tells about the Thracian queen Rhodope and king Hem, who loved each other so much that they were calling each other with the godly names – Hera and Zeus. Gods got so angry at their insolence that they separated them and transformed them into distantly located mountains (the Rhodope Mountain and the Balkan Mountain).

Legends turned the Rhodope mountain into a place with distinct mysticism. Perperikon, the rock formation is situated in the eastern part of the mountain, exactly where the temple of God Dionysus was situated.
